Raise Awareness: Textile Waste and the Antibacterial Solution
There is no way around it: our enormous consumption of textiles has contributed greatly to the growing environmental crisis. Rising demand has strained water and energy resources while filling landfills with cheap fast fashion, textile waste and chemical residues.
The situation has become increasingly unsustainable. Fortunately, consumers are starting to wake up to the problem and are now demanding environmentally friendly alternatives. Although the textile industry and the collective consciousness are slowly changing course, there is still a long way to go. Here we look at how both big clothing brands and our own consumption habits are affecting the environment – and how sustainable solutions like antibacterial textiles can play a central role.
The Environmental Impact of Textile Waste
Modern textile production is built on consumers constantly buying cheap clothes. Fast fashion thrives on the rapid change of trends – and it has been an effective business model. But the consequences are alarming.
We can divide the problem into three main categories: water consumption , air pollution , and solid waste .
1. Excessive Water Consumption
According to the European Parliament, it takes around 2,700 litres of fresh water to produce one cotton T-shirt. That's enough water to cover a person's needs for 2.5 years – for one piece of clothing! In addition, the textile industry is responsible for around 20% of global fresh water pollution, mainly through the dyeing and finishing of textiles.
2. Air pollution
The production of textiles emits harmful substances such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and volatile organic compounds. The fashion industry is currently responsible for around 10% of total global CO₂ emissions.
3. Solid Waste and Microplastics
Landfills are filled to the brim with used clothing, especially polyester. Although we think of polyester as a fabric, it is actually plastic made from oil. It takes a lot of energy to produce and releases microplastics with every wash. Polyester makes up a whopping 35% of all microplastics in the environment.
Therefore, it is clear: the fashion industry and our current consumption patterns cannot continue in the same direction. Fortunately, the EU is already working to make sustainable products the standard through the Green Deal.
The Challenge: Creating Sustainable Textile Products
The younger generation is demanding more responsibility from brands. But many consumers find it difficult to pay more for sustainable products. Therefore, the solution is to make sustainability economically and practically possible – for both producers and customers.
Small changes in production can make a big difference:
-
Use of more durable materials
-
Recycling and upcycling of textiles
-
Designing products with longer lifespans
At Nordifakt, we have taken on the challenge. Our collection of organic and antibacterial towels and bed linen requires fewer washes, lasts longer and is produced responsibly. This reduces both textile waste and water consumption – without compromising on quality or comfort.
Textile Waste: The Challenge for Brands and Manufacturers
Companies around the world have begun implementing solutions to reduce textile waste:
-
Waterless dyeing reduces both chemicals and energy consumption
-
Circular fashion focuses on recycling and reselling products
-
Closed production loops recycle waste from production
-
Degradable materials like organic cotton and linen break down naturally
-
Increased durability reduces the need for replacement
-
Timeless design promotes long-term use over fast trends
Companies like Patagonia , Ecoalf , and The North Face have already proven that sustainability is a viable business model.
At Nordifakt, we go one step further by combining sustainability with antibacterial technology in our textiles, which means that the products can be used over and over again - with fewer washes and lower environmental impact.
Textile Waste: The Challenge for Consumers
It may feel like it all depends on the industry – but it doesn’t. As consumers, we have a huge influence. By choosing quality over quantity , we can all help change the game.
